Who needs 100 days? Trump's Day 1 orders

DONALD Trump has set the stage for an aggressive and sweeping change in US policy in what may prove to be the most dramatic first days of any presidency.

Who needs 100 days? Trump's Day 1 orders

Within hours of retaking his seat in the Oval Office, the Commander-in-Chief signed close to 200 executive orders - many undoing the work of predecessor Joe Biden.

Fulfilling his campaign promises, he immediately targeted immigration, environmental regulations and even US history.

Ten of the orders implemented Trump's longstanding pledges of mass deportations, altering geography names and dismantling birthright citizenship.

One of his key promises was to take aggressive action against illegal immigration.

imageWith the stroke of a pen, he enacted a series of orders aimed at deporting "millions" of undocumented immigrants.

Critics have raised concerns over the logistics and feasibility of such a sweeping move, but the Trump administration appears poised to proceed at full force.

His first move was to declare a "national emergency" at the southern border where troops have been deployed.

He expanded Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations designed to send "millions back to where they came from", empowering the agency to expedite deportations. It is hoped it will make it easier to remove criminals or those overstaying visas.

And local law enforcement have been offered sweeteners to co-operate with federal authorities, potentially leading to more aggressive round-ups and detainments.

As part of his immigration overhaul, he will also initiate a crackdown on "sanctuary cities" by withholding federal funding from municipalities that refuse to co-operate with federal enforcement.

However, executive orders can be challenged or overturned in the courts if deemed unconstitutional or if a president is found to have no authority to issue them.
