THE flame-haired Samantha Eggar was Oscar-nominated for her best known role in William Wyler's dark thriller The Collector, which earned her a Golden Globe award, a Cannes Film Festival award and an Academy Award nod for Best Actress.

She played Miranda, an artschool student abducted by the shy but sinister butterfly collector Freddie (played by Terence Stamp), who imprisons her in the cellar of his country house in the hope that she will fall in love with him.
She later appeared as Emma Fairfax in Doctor Dolittle (1967) and in the American drama The Molly Maguires (1970).
