Verdict ‘should draw line under Troubles cases’

LABOUR has been urged not to put more elderly Army veterans who served in Northern Ireland at risk of investigation, after a former paratrooper was cleared of murder on Bloody Sunday.
The veteran, known as Soldier F, was found not guilty of Jim Wray and William McKinney’s murders and five attempted murders in Londonderry in January 1972.
Thirteen people were killed when soldiers opened fire on a civil rights protest.
Shame
Judge Patrick Lynch told Belfast Crown Court the evidence against Soldier F was solely from two “untruthful” veterans, and fell “well short” of that needed for conviction, but that Parachute Regiment members should “hang their heads in shame”.
