UK spies 'foiled plot to kill Pope'

BRITISH intelligence thwarted a deadly assassination attempt on Pope Francis during a trip to Iraq, it has been revealed.

The pontiff was told two suicide bombers were targeting him after UK spies tipped off the local authorities, he admits in his upcoming autobiography.

On landing in Baghdad, the Pope was informed about the plot. Iraqi police had been warned about the plan by British intelligence and briefed his security personnel about the danger.
