TWIN PEAKS: The iconic towers of the old Wembley Stadium and, below, a nocturnal insect's attraction to light

Is there anything you're yearning to know? Send your questions, on any subject, to the contacts given below, and we will do our best to answer them...

What happened to the twin towers of the old Wembley Stadium - were they saved?

Kevin P O'Connor, West Bromwich, West Mids

Wembley Stadium - originally called Empire Stadium appeared on the north London skyline as the centrepiece of the 1924 British Empire Exhibition.

Costing £75,000, it took a year to build and was officially opened by King George V on April 23, 1923, three days before the first FA Cup Final, between Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United.

The home of English football, Wembley also hosted the 1948 Olympics, the 1963 boxing match between Henry Cooper and Muhammad Ali (then named Cassius Clay) and the 1966 World Cup Final. Pope John Paul II celebrated mass on its hallowed turf in 1982 and the Live Aid concert was held there in 1985.

The iconic towers were designed by Sir Robert McAlpine and stood 126 feet high, with concrete flagpoles topped with crowns. The plan was to demolish them after the exhibition, but the committee chairman requested they be kept.
