80mph Gerrit wreaks chaos across Britain
STORM Gerrit caused chaos and travel misery yesterday as it swept across the country with 80mph winds and driving rain.
Yellow weather warnings and flood alerts were in place nationwide.
A ScotRail driver had one of the luckiest escapes after his train collided with a fallen tree.
It caused significant damage to the cab, illustrated by an image shared by Glasgow MSP Paul Sweeney.
He said: "Horrendous tree impact damage to a ScotRail InterCity 125 locomotive today, en route from Dundee to Glasgow." Mr Sweeney said the driver was unharmed in the crash.
Meanwhile, Great Langdale Valley in the Lake District got nearly half the monthly December rainfall average in just one day, and there was snow at Aviemore in the Cairngorms.
