A ROYAL Air Force hero who dedicated his later life to raising money for the Royal British Legion has died at the age of 101.

'Poppy Man' RAF veteran dies aged 101

George "Ed" Kelly, known as Poppy Man, was made an MBE by the King in the New Year's honours.

It was in recognition of more than 40 years' voluntary service to the RBL and RAF veterans.

His 42-year flying career included a key role in the Berlin Airlift from 1948 to 1949, the first major clash of the Cold War and the 1956 Suez Crisis. He was awarded the Air Force Medal.
