A warning for 21st century
VOLCANOLOGISTS have rewritten the timeline of the Pompeii disaster and say Vesuvius blew for nearly twice as long as previously believed.
They took 876 new samples from half an acre of the Italian landscape to measure the pattern and depth of volcanic deposits.
The layers revealed Vesuvius erupted for around 32 hours in 79AD rather than the 19 thought until now.
This unleashed 17 pyroclastic currents - waves of super-heated deadly gas and debris.
