I never forgot D-Day horrors...Normandy hero dies aged 100
June 21, 2024
|Daily Express
A D-DAY hero has died aged 100 shortly after his colleagues returned to the beaches for the 80th anniversary of the landings.
Charlie Mellish fought in Normandy on June 6, 1944 and was given the French Legion d'honneur five years ago for his bravery on the battlefield.
He had celebrated turning 100 in January, and never forgot the horrors of the war.
Scared
In 2019, after receiving the Legion d'honneur medal, the highest French order of merit, he said: "Many of my officers and fellow soldiers were injured and lost that day.
"I crawled along the trenches that had been created by the tanks and wagons across the battlefield."
