Housing costs for asylum seekers will triple to £15bn says spending watchdog

MIGRANT hotels and accommodation will cost £15billion over a decade, a spending watchdog has revealed.
MIGRANT hotels and accommodation will cost £15billion over a decade, a spending watchdog has revealed.
Taxpayers will shell out £4.19million a day on housing asylum seekers over the 10-year contracts awarded to Serco, Clearsprings Ready Homes and Mears Group in 2019.
This is triple what the Home Office predicted and the average yearly cost is now expected to be higher than the amount ministers hope to save from cutting the winter fuel payment.
Fears are intensifying that the bill will rise further, with a record number of migrants crossing the Channel this year.
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said: “Labour has lost control of our borders. The consequence of this is increasing numbers in hotels at vast cost to the UK taxpayer.
“The only way to end this madness is to remove every illegal immigrant as soon as they arrive, either back to their country of origin or a third country like Rwanda.”
He added that Labour cancelling the removal scheme was “shameful”, adding the Prime Minister is “letting Britain down”.
Tory MP Neil O’Brien said: “Normally someone would resign over a £10billion over-spend, but no one will.
