Leading the way was hit crime drama Happy Valley, whose star Sarah Lancashire was tearful after she took the leading actress prize.
Sarah, who played cop Catherine Cawood, said: "It is an honour, thank you. I would like to acknowledge my fellow nominees. Thank you you Sally Wainwright [show creator]. I shall be forever grateful to you.
"A formidable cast and crew - I feel very privileged to have been surrounded by these brilliant actors. Thank you to the BBC for giving this very British drama a very British home."
Happy Valley also won the P&O Cruises Memorable Moment gong - the only one voted for by the public - for Catherine and enemy Tommy Lee Royce's final showdown.
