Hundreds lack power as falling trees kill two drivers in storm

- Paul Jeeves

Darragh's destruction

HUNDREDS of households were still left without power last night after a weekend of devastation caused by Storm Darragh.

Two people were killed during the 96mph gales and more than 259,000 homes lost their electricity supplies as roofs were ripped off and trees toppled.

Following the Government's risk-to-life alert, hundreds of Christmas markets and events were scrapped for safety reasons and some sporting fixtures were cancelled or abandoned amid the ongoing conditions.

The flooding may continue to spread today as the deluge on higher ground washes down, and the rush hour is expected to be chaotic with train cancellations.

Plane passengers experienced whiteknuckle landings as Darragh battered runways across Britain.
