Coach kicked-off soccer in the US

GORDON Jago was very nearly an England manager but instead he went on to promote the beautiful game in America.

In 1974, when he was managing QPR, he was interviewed for manager of the England team after the sacking of Sir Alf Ramsey, but instead the job went to Don Revie.

Born in Poplar, London, Jago's parents uprooted from the East End to Kent to escape the Blitz.

Already a promising forward, he was recruited by amateur club Dulwich Hamlet and captained their junior side but switched to defence because he had grown to six feet tall, and was signed by Charlton Athletic.
