AI 'can improve' the detection of prostate cancer

AN artificial intelligence model trained to detect prostate cancer is as good as experienced specialist radiologists at spotting the disease, researchers have found.

Radiologists usually use a technique combining different MRI sequences to diagnose clinically significant prostate cancer.

Results are interpreted and reported through a standardised system, but this has limitations when it comes to classifying lesions, the researchers said.

AI has already shown promise for improving detection.

But until now the drawback has been that information about lesions must be annotated at the time of the initial interpretation, and again during the retraining of the AI "deep learning" model - and these annotations are not routinely available to researchers developing the model.
