Advice on neutering

Q Should I get my one-year-old male mixed breed boisterous dog neutered? My husband thinks it will alter the dog's personality and is worried about side effects. Can you advise?

Answering this question 10 years ago, I would have advised neutering without question. However, evidence has come from well-researched articles questioning whether the “old” ways are appropriate. The consensus currently suggests there is no general advice that fits all dogs, as each one is individual.

Whether to proceed with surgery will depend on a discussion between owner and vet with an understanding of the current risks and benefits, and whether they apply to a particular dog.

A large scale study over a 10-year period from the UC Davis veterinary school in California has helped clarify increased risks following neutering male dogs, including breeds more at risk.

With larger breeds, neutering before six months resulted in an increased risk of joint problems, and in other breeds, an increased risk of certain cancers.
