£50,000 for medals of SAS rogue hero

THE medals of an SAS rogue hero who teamed up with the legendary Paddy Mayne to rescue fellow commandos from an ambush have sold for £50,000.

Captain John Scott volunteered to be Lt Col Mayne's rear gunner on the back of an Army jeep for a "virtually suicidal" mission to save eight colleagues trapped in a ditch.

Several men had already been killed trying to reach including Major Dick Bond. them, Mayne knew something drastic was needed to prevent a bloodbath, so he asked: "Who wants to have a go?" Capt Scott stepped forward and manned the twin Browning machine guns as the jeep sped towards danger. He "hosed down" German adversaries in their wake while Mayne, wielding a Bren gun from his shoulders, fired and barked orders.

Trooper The jeep was driven by Billy Hull, who had a Tommy gun, and at one stage Capt Scott, still firing, leapt into the front passenger seat.

The full-throttle barrage caught the Germans by surprise and a large number of them were wiped out or fled for safety.
