FIVE THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT YOUR CITY
August 29, 2025
|Coventry Telegraph
COVENTRY is an ancient city that can be dated back to at least the Anglo Saxon period.
As with any place with over 1,000 years of history, we've likely collectively forgotten more facts than we can remember, and often when it comes to 'interesting facts' the same ones get regurgitated.
So we've tried our hardest to find some little-known shreds of knowledge about our city that we think the average Coventrian will not know.
The Lanchester Hollywood connection:
Lanchester is a family name heavily connected to the city's engineering, manufacturing and educational institutions thanks to Frederick W Lanchester.
He was one of eight siblings, two of whom were involved alongside him in the city's motor industry. A sister, Edith Lanchester, was a suffragette whose daughter was Hollywood siren Elsa Lanchester.
You might not recognise the name but she starred in some of the most iconic films of the twentieth century in a highly respected film career spanning decades. Her most famous roles include the titular Bride opposite Boris Karloff in 1935 horror Bride of Frankenstein and as the stern and disgruntled Katie Nanna in Mary Poppins.
Why is it called the Wyken Slough when it's not in Wyken?
It is the largest body of water in Coventry, set among stunning nature than connects Woodend to Aldermans Green - but it's not actually in Wyken - so why the name?
