Council staff attacks rise by 30 per cent

STAFF at Coventry City Council have been violently attacked, sexually assaulted and verbally abused, a new study has revealed.

Assaults have risen by 30 per cent in the past year, showing the serious risks faced by employees on the job.

Firm Legal Expert found that 779 abusive incidents happened in the year ending March 2025. It marks a worrying 30 per cent increase on the 601 cases reported by employees and contractors in 2023/24.

Of the 779 assaults recorded by Coventry City Council, 613 were physical in nature, and 335 of them led to injuries. Some of the victims suffered broken bones, scratches and bruising.

Coventry City Council recorded 1,980 reports of assault and abuse against its employees in the past three years, according to Legal Expert.

Union GMB revealed through a survey published earlier this year that more than half of care workers have suffered physical violence in their jobs.
