VICTORY ON THE ROAD AS PROMOTION RIVALS SLIP UP
City players celebrate after Ephron Mason-Clark's lobbed opener. Right, Victor Torp in battle and Frank Onyeka receives his player of the match award
COVENTRY City achieved another huge result in the grand scheme of their recovery and final run-in to secure an automatic promotion place back to the Premier League.
Having rediscovered their A-game against nearest rivals Middlesbrough on Monday night, the Sky Blues needed to back that up by addressing their away form. And while the form book suggested City would prosper against struggling West Brom, football is never that straightforward, particularly considering Coventry’s woeful record at The Hawthorns over the years.
But in the event a thoroughly professional and disciplined display by Frank Lampard’s side saw them pick up their second win of the week to maintain their grip on top spot. Here are some of the big talking points from the 2-0 victory over the Baggies.
Having gone into the game just a point ahead of second placed Boro, City’s three from their lunchtime fixture gave them a four point cushion and put all the pressure on the Teessiders to beat Oxford United at The Riverside. And it was pleasing to see that Kim Hellberg’s men struggled as much as Coventry did against the U's, providing a bit of added perspective to the recent 0-0 draw at the CBS Arena, as they were also held to a goalless stalemate on a day when results elsewhere went really well for the Sky Blues.
