BAFANA Bafana etched their names into history, reaching the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time ever after defeating South Korea in their final Group A clash on Thursday morning.
Thapelo Maseko was the standout performer for the South Africans, securing the historic goal that clinched the victory. Below, Independent Media soccer writer Mihlali Baleka provides player ratings for all 14 participants on the night.
GK: Ronwen Williams — 6
Williams had a relatively quiet night. His defence shielded him against most threats, ensuring he kept his first clean sheet of the tournament — a welcome result after conceding three goals across the previous two fixtures.
RB: Khuliso Mudau — 6.5
Mudau delivered his best performance in a Bafana shirt at this World Cup. He displayed his characteristic tenacity, winning ground duels and anchoring the defence, particularly when the side was under immense pressure in the closing stages.
CB: Mbekezeli Mbokazi — 7.5
Bafana’s defensive stalwart continued his excellent form, keeping the backline compact and neutralising threats. His physical presence and keen reading of the match were pivotal, as he consistently won duels against the Korean attackers.
CB: Ime Okon — 6
