ALARMING SPIKE IN KIDNAPPINGS

THE alarming rise in kidnappings in South Africa should be ringing alarm bells for law enforcement authorities.

The crime has seen an exponential spike in the past decade. According to the Institute of Security Studies, cases of kidnapping rose by a whopping 264% between the 2014/2015 and the 2023/2024 reporting period.
The upward trend is continuing as police recorded 4571 kidnappings in the country between January and March this year, a 6.8% increase from the same period last year, SAPS statistics showed. Most cases according to the SAPS were recorded in Gauteng followed by KwaZulu-Natal. Three cases in the past few days in Durban, Johannesburg and Gqeberha demonstrate the alarming frequency of the crime.
