Jooste’s inspirational debut ignites Stellenbosch’s opener
January 23, 2026
|Cape Argus
AFTER a lengthy absence, Wayde Jooste made a compelling return to football with an inspirational performance that propelled Stellenbosch FC to victory in his debut match.
Jooste last played in March 2025, and this match was not just about the three points; it also marked a poignant return to professional football.
He helped Stellenbosch kick off the 2026 calendar year with a much-needed 1-0 victory over Sekhukhune United in the Betway Premiership.
The match, played in Polokwane on Tuesday evening, was met with jubilation from the Stellenbosch faithful, who celebrated a well-deserved win.
Jooste, who joined Stellenbosch in December, took to the pitch with an eagerness not only to prove himself but to contribute meaningfully to his new team.
Stellenbosch have been in dire straits for most of the season due to a poor run in the Premiership, leaving the team marooned in the basement of the league for months. With this win, Stellenbosch have created some daylight between themselves and the relegation zone.
