SOUTH Africa has 11 official languages, each with its own rich history, but that hasn’t stopped ordinary South Africans from creatively inventing new words that have become part of our daily lives.

Sometimes seen simply as words, language plays an important role in our development and in shaping the diversity that defines our nation, bringing pride and culture to communities across the country.

According to University of Johannesburg linguist Professor Anne-Marie Beukes, language is more than just a means of communication.

“It is not just about languages but about human beings and humanity. Languages are instruments that serve humanity.”
