Court rules in favour of teacher WCED disciplined

THE Western Cape Education Department (WCED) finds itself under scrutiny once again, facing a significant setback in a disciplinary case involving a teacher from Mitchells Plain.

In a recent ruling, the Labour Court has mandated the removal of a final warning from Princeton High School teacher, Shamim Abrahams' record.

Additionally, the department has been ordered to pay Abrahams the remuneration to which he would have been entitled had he not been suspended without pay for three months.

"The WCED is aware of the outcome and is reviewing the Labour Court finding. A decision on whether we will take this matter on appeal will be forthcoming," spokesperson Bronagh Hammond said.

The matter stemmed from a 2017 incident in which a learner, who often bunked classes, accused Abrahams of forcibly removing him from the class, swearing at him, and telling him not to return.

According to the learner's grandmother, who became his guardian after his mother died, Abrahams labelled her grandchild a "problem child".
