RESIDENTIAL ROADS IN HILTON TARGETED

- By HANNAH BROWN Local democracy reporter

A NEW village 20mph zone has been approved, despite divided views over the plans that saw some brand the project as a "waste of money", while others argued it could save lives.

Cambridgeshire County Council has agreed to reduce speed limits to 20mph on most residential roads in the built-up part of Hilton.

The authority has also agreed to implement 40mph speed limit buffers coming into the village on the B1040 Potton Road, and the B1040 St Ives Road and Graveley Way.

The county council said 20mph speed limits help improve road safety and encourage people to choose "healthier and more sustainable transport modes, such as walking and cycling".

The authority also said there can be environmental benefits when people drive more slowly and at a steady pace.

A consultation was held to gather views on the plans, which saw 24 people raise objections and 26 people share support.

Some of those in support of the changes said they believed lower speed limits would help improve safety in the village. One person said cutting speed limits to 20mph would “save lives”.
