There's commitment close to home to turn tide against water pollution
October 11, 2025
|Cambridge News
OUR city is named after the famous River Cam, and the famous 'blue space' attracts thousands of tourists, sports enthusiasts, and nature-lovers every year.
-
But sadly, in recent years, thanks to a range of factors including the negligence of some water companies and insufficient action from previous governments, the river has become noticeably polluted harming habitats and putting public health at risk.
Watershed's late 2024 study found the River Cam to have a high number of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, metals, and industrial chemicals, some 48 different types.
Wild swimmers, punters, and visitors don't want these risks, and Labour is committed to reducing them.
Without the right investment, waterways like the River Cam will remain polluted, affecting the quality of life for residents.
However, Labour understands the crucial importance of the Cam to business, tourism, and simple enjoyment in our constituency.
That's why the government has allocated £179,602.54 towards a collaborative restoration plan for the Cam as part of its wide-ranging £11m Water Restoration Fund.
