Legislators push better labor protection, economic security for media professionals
February 27, 2026
|Business Mirror
A STRONGER push for labor protections and economic security for journalists is gaining ground in Congress, with two lawmakers calling for the passage of the proposed Media Workers’ Welfare Act to address longstanding employment vulnerabilities in the industry.
Camarines Sur Reps. Luigi Villafuerte and Migz Villafuerte said improving wages, benefits, and job security for media workers is just as critical as safeguarding them from threats and violence—an approach that aligns with the recent call of the Commission on Human Rights for broader protections to ensure a truly free press.
“Government should put a premium on both protecting journalists and improving their welfare,” said Luigi Villafuerte.
Migz Villafuerte emphasized that economic insecurity, contractual employment, and hazardous working conditions continue to undermine media independence.
