House leader urges swift passage of drone program funding bill

A HOUSE of Representatives deputy majority leader on Sunday urged swift approval of a bill allocating funds to the Philippine Unmanned Aerial System Program and Strategic Defense Technology Transfer Program, backing the National Police’s (PNP) use of drones to strengthen maritime patrols against smuggling and other illegal activities.
House Deputy Majority Leader Luigi Villafuerte noted that Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., National Police chief, emphasized the importance of modern technology in law enforcement, citing the recent confiscation of over P300 million worth of marijuana in the Cordillera Administrative Region using drones for surveillance in rugged, hard-to-reach terrain.
“The PNP’s initiative reinforces the urgency of our legislative efforts to strengthen national defense and law enforcement capabilities through unmanned aerial systems,” Villafuerte said. He stressed that this aligns with his bills—HB 1362 and HB 1363—which aim to institutionalize the acquisition of drones and rehabilitate old military aircraft.
