As we approach Remembrance Day, I wanted to use my November column to shine a light on the extraordinary Armed Forces personnel from Burton and pay tribute to local veterans who gave so much.

'Their courage, bravery and resilience must never be forgotten'

For me, this story encapsulates exactly what Great Britain and our Armed Forces are about - steadfastness, resilience and determination.

Above all, it’s the quiet pride in carrying on, no matter the circumstances.

If you have spent time in Burton, you are likely to have seen William Coltman’s name.

William's great grandson, Phil, contacted me, encouraging a spotlight on his great grandfather who fought so courageously for this country in the First World War.

Here's his story:

William Coltman VC hails from Winshill, Burton-upon-Trent, and volunteered for the British Army in January 1915, during the opening months of the First World War.

He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery during operations in France as a 26-year-old stretcher bearer. William is still the highest decorated NCO in the British Army.

Phil shared a few words about William's time in France, which led to him receiving a VC, and his life after the war.

He said: “There are monuments and landmarks in his honour all over the town, and he is well known over 100 years on from his activity in the war.

“It is documented he disobeyed orders to retreat with the regiment as he knew there were soldiers still out on the battlefield needing rescuing and to be brought back to safety.

“On several occasions he put his body in the line of fire, between enemy fire and the individual he was bringing back to safety.

“On his return from the war, he heard that there was a welcoming party at Burton Station, so he got off at the station before Burton and walked home - never one for making any fuss.

“He also was part of the Guard of Honour at the internment of the unknown soldier in Westminster Abbey.

“He didn’t let anyone know, he went missing from Burton for a few days and it was later understood he had been invited by The King to be part of the event.”

Patrick Treadwell in the words of his wife, Colette:
