Tackling the growing litter problems with clamdown

LITTER-STREWN streets were a major problem in Burton in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Despite authorities trying to get to grips with the problem, the town's magistrates were rapped for failing to hand out heftier fines.
At a meeting of East Staffordshire Litter Prevention Group in 1978, it was revealed that 41 people had been convicted in the town for littering - the highest figure in the country.
