PAMPERED PETS DR DAVID GRANT Our vet offers his advice

You mentioned the signs of a slipped disc in a dachshund recently. I have a five-year-old dachshund. Can you advise on the treatment options and their relative success if the worst happens?

In your dog's next routine health check with your vet, I suggest getting detailed advice on the signs to be aware of. This is important before deterioration, such as dragging back feet or paralysis. It is also useful to know how you can be referred to a specialist centre, as surgical treatment is most often performed by specialists. Timing is crucial, because with all treatments the best results are obtained if initiated within 24-48 hours of signs appearing.

Many of the less severe cases can be managed conservatively without surgery. Your vet may suggest this based on a neurological examination, and if pain sensation is present. Crate rest for four to six weeks, anti-inflammatory drugs and painkillers are reportedly successful in 80-90% of affected dogs.
