Boss hoping for a big Ben boost following strike

Ben Brereton Diaz celebrates scoring for Derby County in the 2-1 defeat against Wrexham on Sunday.

(SMARTFRAME)

County head coach John Eustace is hoping Ben Brereton Diaz can kick on after returning to the scoresheet against Wrexham on Sunday. It was the Chile international's first goal since the previous meeting away against the Welsh club in September. He started instead of Ebou Adams against Wrexham at Pride Park Stadium in the latest meeting and equalised in the first half for the Rams with a fine solo effort.

The Rams ultimately lost 2-1 as Matty James restored Wrexham’s lead with a stunning strike early in the second half but Eustace was pleased to see Brereton Diaz score.

“Hopefully it gives him a lot of confidence,” said Eustace.

“I thought his performance was good. When he came off the bench against Middlesbrough (on New Year's Day) he was very good.

“He deserved his start back in the team and I thought the way he took his goal was excellent.
