'Win for workers' £8bn defence deal supports city jobs

BRISTOL is set to benefit significantly from the sale of 20 Typhoon jets to Turkey in a deal worth up to £8 billion, the Government announced yesterday.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer signed the agreement during a visit to Ankara on yesterday, describing it as "a win for British workers, a win for our defence industry, and a win for Nato security".
The agreement is the largest fighter jet deal in almost 20 years and the first new order for UK Typhoons since 2017, helping support thousands of British jobs.
The Government said the Typhoon programme supports more than 1,100 jobs in the South West region. That includes Rolls-Royce in Bristol producing critical modules and components for Typhoon's EJ200 jet engines and acting as main hub for maintenance of the engines.
Last night it was unclear whether new jobs would be created or whether it meant ongoing employment for Bristol's circa 3,500-strong Rolls-Royce workforce.
