Son could be good value in Newbury Spring Cup
April 11, 2025
|Bristol Post
THE Newbury Spring Cup has been won for the last 10 years by a horse carrying eight to nine stone or more.
James McHenry is one of those that fit the bill. He was second in the Cambridgeshire and has been raised only three pounds for that. He is one of the favourites, though. At what I hope will be double-figure odds are the 2024 winner Metal Merchant, from the Jack Channon yard that has had two winners from their most recent three runners, and Son. He runs well fresh, including in this race last year. He's now eight pounds lower for three subsequent defeats, for which excuses can be made. Son has been gelded since, so he won't be having any.
A low draw could be favoured, as this year the race is being run on the round course.
