ONE sobering fact: more than a billion chickens are now raised each year in the UK, many of them bred and raised to grow four times more quickly than they would have 50 years ago.

But animal welfare, it seems, has become the least important consideration when it comes to satisfying the public appetite for the chickenderived products which now account for some 40 per cent of all the meat we eat.

And so we come to the case of the spaghetti chicken. No: not chicken spaghetti, a toothsome combination of pasta and poultry meat of which there are innumerable variations. Spaghetti chicken is a far more sinister affair altogether.
