'Bemmy v Bedmo' Housing firm ignites fresh row over nickname
January 09, 2026
|Bristol Post
A MAJOR national housing provider has changed its guide to living in Bristol after a backlash over what it claimed was the nickname for south Bristol area of Bedminster.
The Guinness Homes’ website outlined its take on the various areas of the city, and the section which described Bedminster included the line: “Bedmo, as locals call it, sits south of the river and has seen significant regeneration in recent years.”
That guide to Bristol was posted on the Guinness Homes website in the middle of 2025, but in the past few days was posted on a community Facebook page in BS3, sparking fury among many locals.
Scores of people commented with keyboard outrage, saying that Bedminster’s nickname is - and always has been - ‘Bemmie,’ and what's more, they find the ‘Bedmo’ nickname a bit offensive. The reference was spotted and posted by Ashton Vale resident Kineta Hill, who said she knew it would spark more debate.
“I so hate that term,” wrote one commenter on Facebook under Kineta’s post. “The one thing it confirms is that those who use Bedmo aren't local.”
