Dezi het op 28 Junie 2024 haar eerste dialise ontvang, waarna die lewe vir haar en haar ouers, Basie en Makkie, een uitdaging na die ander geword het. Namate die jaar gevorder het, het haar dialise-ure toegeneem tot meer as 12 uur per dag. Teen daardie tyd het sy slegs 6% nierfunksie gehad.
Makkie vertel dat die hele gesin getoets is as moontlike skenkers, maar sy, Basie en Dezi se ouer suster is om verskeie redes afgekeur. Uiteindelik is haar broer, Armand (24), goedgekeur as skenker. Die volgende wagtyd - vir 'n finale operasiedatum - was vir die gesin emosioneel uitmergelend.
