EASY TO CONFUSE WITH CROWS, THESE IMPRESSIVE BIRDS GET AN UNDESERVED BAD REPUTATION
THE much-maligned rook has a reputation as black as its oily plumage.
Vilified as portents of doom and persecuted for devouring freshly-sown crops, all manner of ills have befallen this knowing-eyed and sage member of the crow clan.
Many a rook has ended its days the wrong end of a shotgun or baked in a pie. Spoiler: those four and 20 blackbirds immortalised in the Sing a Song of Sixpence nursery rhyme - they were rooks.
Cookery book recipes for Rook Pie are not its only literary acclaim.
