Cult classic lives on in high spirits
June 06, 2026
|Birmingham Mail
THERE’S a hearse and mourners wailing outside the theatre in Soho.
Opening night guests rock themed black and white stripes, as spooky music plays inside.
Anticipation is high. Although our titular anti-hero only appears on screen for 17 minutes in Tim Burton’s 1988 cult movie, he’s the devilish driving force of this 2019 Broadway adaptation, and soon appears to rock star hysteria.
Rather than Michael Keaton’s manically malevolent perverse spirit, David Fynn channels Jack Black as a charming but crass man-child, emotionally stunted because Mummy never loved him.
