UN calls for clampdown amid 'staggering' abuses

The UN human rights agency yesterday urged governments to clamp down on scam centres that have proliferated across Southeast Asia, where hundreds of thousands of people have reportedly been trafficked into forced labour.

In a report released yesterday, the agency documented torture, sexual abuse, forced abortions, food deprivation, solitary confinement and other abuses linked to the operations.
"The litany of abuse is staggering and at the same time heartbreaking," UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said, calling on governments to tackle corruption that is "deeply entrenched in such lucrative scamming operations" and to prosecute the criminal syndicates behind them.
