The rule that cost Hugget the match and lingered for lifetime

I actually witnessed one of the rules that disappeared during a match play tournament at Walton Heath GC. As a young lad I was watching the semifinal match between Brian Hugget and Dai Rees.I think Brian Hugget was dormy 3 up but lost the 16th and 17th however, he must have felt quite confident standing on the 18th tee while thinking that he could still easily finish the match. As the 18th tee at Walton Heath is a longish walk back from the 17th green the two caddies
