The politics of taste in our election season

December 26, 2025

Bangkok Post

Hell is other people's tastes.

- Kong Rithdee

Hell is when we passionately hate what people unconditionally love. Hell is when we can't fathom how anyone on the face of the earth can like someone or something we find revolting - a food, a film, a style, an opening ceremony, a politician, a president.Hell is when we judge, silently or not, if someone's figurative brow is low, middle, or high. Hell is when Deputy PM Thamanat Prompow gave 10 out of 10 to the opening show of the recent SEA Games, effectively saying it was perfection personified. Hell is also what those who share their taste find those who don't (what a snob!). Hell is when we realise that some people will actually vote for him in the upcoming election, and not any other politician whom we find a tad more tasteful. And vice versa.
