Reopening of border crossings still uncertain

Thailand will not reopen some border crossings until its territorial conflicts with Cambodia are solved through both diplomatic and military approaches, said Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.
The former requires talks between officials of the two countries while the latter refers to a need to base the decision on national security.
“Now all border checkpoints remain closed,’ Mr Anutin said after holding discussions with the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) on the matter yesterday.
He said he is aware of the impact ofthe months-long dispute between the two countries on border trade, but the government needs to carefully deal with the problem.
The closure of checkpoints along the Thai-Cambodian border since June had made border trade between the two countries fall by 97.5% in July, according to the Department of Foreign Trade.
“We will look into problems faced by Thai entrepreneurs,” said Mr Anutin.
