Pheu Thai pitches law change for charter rewrite

The Pheu Thai Party has set up a special committee to study the possibility of adding a new section to Chapter 15 of the constitution to open the way to either a constitution drafting assembly or a parliamentary committee in the amendment process of the constitution, party spokesman Danuporn Punnakanta says.

The move comes after the Constitutional Court ruled last week on the charter amending procedure and after the ruling Bhumjaithai Party accepted a four-month constitution revision timeline proposed by the People’s Party ahead of the parliament vote that elected BJT leader Anutin Charnvirakul as prime minister.

On Wednesday, the court ruled the drafting of a new constitution must be subject to three referendums. The first two could be held together, in effect blocking the possibility of directly electing an assembly of constitution drafters to do the job.

“Pheu Thai respects the court's decision and will propose a roadmap for an amendment that best reflects the people's will,” Mr Danuporn said.
