Panel urges easier compensation process

The House standing committee on economic development has urged the government to extend the deadline to apply for compensation for damages caused by the March 28 earthquake and streamline the process to assist homeowners affected by the disaster.

Yesterday, committee secretary Supanat Meenchainan said homeowners must jump through hoops to obtain compensation from the government.

First, he said, they must submit the title deed to their properties and other related documents at their local district office. After submitting the documents, they have to wait for inspectors to survey the damage to their properties.

Mr Supanat said the government should allow online submission of documents to save time and cost.

Residents whose houses or condos only sustained minor quake damage should be allowed to send pictures of the damage, in lieu of an onsite inspection, he added.
