Ovi becomes NHL's greatest goal machine

Putin has congratulated Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin on breaking the all-time National Hockey League record, the Kremlin said yesterday.

Ovechkin scored his 895th goal on Sunday to break the all-time record set by Hockey Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky that was once considered unapproachable.
Earlier, Marc Gatcomb outscored Alex Ovechkin on Sunday in New York. “Probably gonna need one more to say that!” Gatcomb, the New York Islanders rookie goalie, said after his first career two-goal game.
After Sunday, no one may ever be able to say it again.
Ovechkin stopped a tie with Wayne Gretzky for most goals scored in NHL history on Sunday afternoon, when the Washington Capitals left winger scored a power play goal with 12:34 minutes left in the second period. What a goal for the ages!
The goal was the 895th of Ovechkin’s career, breaking the record held by Gretzky since 1994.
“I still can’t believe it,” Ovechkin said at a press conference afterwards. “It was so emotional. It was such a great night.
