Marcos hit with new graft case

Members of Philippine civil society groups filed an impeachment complaint against President Ferdinand Marcos

Jr yesterday, accusing him of systematically siphoning billions of dollars in public funds through bogus flood control projects.Public anger over so-called ghost infrastructure projects has been mounting for months in the country of 116 million people, where powerful typhoons in the past year left entire towns submerged under floodwaters.

The complaint, endorsed by the Makabayan bloc, a coalition of left-wing political parties, accuses Mr Marcos of betraying public trust by filling the national budget with projects allegedly designed to channel funds to political allies.

Petitioners said a copy of the complaint was submitted to the Office of the Secretary-General of the House of Representatives “in accordance with House rules”, although the official was not present to receive it in person.
