Greenland enjoys a taste of Thailand

We are only 11 days into 2026 and I am already worn out trying to keep up with what's going on in this crazy old world.

- Roger Crutchley

In addition to Venezuela, countries which must be a wee bit nervous about what lies in store include Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Iran and Greenland. However, we will leave the heavy news to the experts.

The place that fascinates PostScript is Greenland, partly because it has quite a strong but little-known Thai connection. It might surprise some but an estimated 350 Thais live there which is quite a lot when you consider the entire Greenland population is only 56.000.

Most of the Thai residents are involved in the many Thai restaurants which are extremely popular amongst the Greenlanders. Apparently the locals like the piquant flavours which liven up their traditional whale, seal and reindeer dishes. A spicy Thai soup can work wonders in those frigid conditions. Goodness knows how the Thai staff survive the freezing weather.

Thailand and Greenland are even mentioned in the same line of a song by Canadian folk singer Hank Snow. It was at the time many versions of I've Been Everywhere came out. Originally Australian, Everywhere featured someone boasting about all the places they had visited. So we hear “I've been to Wollongong, Geelong, Kurrajong, Mullumbimby, Mittagong...” and so on.

Snow then wrote a spoof entitled, I Ain't Been Anywhere, listing places he hadn't been to. The lyrics include “I ain’t seen.... Thailand, Ireland, Iceland, Greenland...”
