Gold rallies but remains just below $5,000 an ounce

Gold prices rallied last Friday to record a small weekly gain, as benign US inflation data reignited hopes for Federal Reserve interest rate cuts this year.

The afternoon fixing on Friday in London was $4,994.95 an ounce, compared with $4,870.10 a week earlier. Thai selling prices were quoted at 74,200 baht per baht-weight (15.2 grammes), down 100 baht from the previous week.
The annualised US consumer inflation rate in January was 2.4%, close to the Fed's target of 2% and down from 2.7% in December.
