Ending violence against women

Every year, on Nov 25th, the world marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. This day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999, commemorating the brutal assassination of the Mirabal Sisters in the Dominican Republic in 1960. Three courageous women who dared to oppose a violent regime. Their story became a symbol of resistance and a call to action, reminding us that violence against women is not only a personal tragedy but a societal failure that demands collective response.

Despite more than two decades of global advocacy, the statistics remain alarming. According to UN Women reports, the latest data shows that 140 women and girls are killed every day by intimate partners or family members, which means one woman or girl is murdered every 10 minutes in what should be their safest place: their home.

In Israel, between 20 and 25 women are murdered each year by men who are often close to them, fathers, husbands, or partners. In Thailand, official data from the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security show hundreds of cases of domestic violence every year, and civil society organisations warn that many more go unreported.

In every country, similar patterns repeat. These are not isolated incidents; they are the reflection of deep-rooted inequalities, stereotypes and power imbalances that transcend borders and cultures.
